The Story behind Triumph to the Summit
In 2015, we held our very first Triumph to the Summit event thanks to Triumph Fitness alum Crystal Rowland. At her Triumph Fitness graduation celebration, Crystal announced that she wanted to do something special to pay it forward to help other cancer survivors like her to benefit from Triumph Fitness. She organized a team that trained throughout the summer of 2015. On September 11th, a group of 10 Team Triumph members successfully climbed Mt. St. Helens in Washington. On the summit, the group held a special ceremony to honor those who had been lost to cancer or who were in the fight. This incredible team also raised $6,000 for our Foundation! Watch the video that Crystal created of 2015’s inspiring day:
For 2016, we decided to move the climb closer to Sacramento so that more Triumph alumni, friends, family, and supporters can join us on this special challenge. 19 Team Members summited Mt Tallac on September 9th, 2016 and over $8,000 was raised for our Foundation!
In 2017, our team climbed to the top of Freel Peak. This mountain is the tallest in the Lake Tahoe basin topping out at over 10,880′. After training the entire summer, our team was ready. Our team of 19 included 8 cancer survivors and we raised over $13,000 for Triumph!
For 2018, we have decided to revisit Mt. Tallac. The hike is beautiful and challenging. The trail takes us by two beautiful lakes, and we will be treated to unforgettable views of both Fallen Leaf Lake and Lake Tahoe. It will be a memorable day for our team. Mt Tallac is located in the Southeast Lake Tahoe Basin. This Sierra peak has an elevation of 9,735 ft. The hike is approximately 10 miles round trip. We will be training throughout the summer in preparation for the final hike in September. Along the way, we will spend time in the Carson Pass area, hiking into pristine lakes, and climbing to the top of a few more peaks as we get our team ready for the final hike.
Triumph Fitness alumni will be leading our team for the 3rd year. Our Leaders will be organizing all of our conditioning hikes and other details. Several of our Triumph Fitness Instructors, Board Members, and other support people with hiking experience will assist in training our team.
What makes Triumph to the Summit such a special experience is the team training. The final day on the summit of the mountain is truly a triumph because of all the hard work and hours put in on the trail during the summer months. While participating in all of the conditioning hikes is not mandatory, it is encouraged. Bonding with the team is an essential part of Triumph to the Summit. Team Leaders will require that team members participate in a minimum number of hikes.
Throughout the summer, on every Saturday, our team leaders will post a new conditioning hike for the team. Each hike will get progressively longer, and higher in elevation to prepare team members for hiking at elevation. Most of our training will occur in the Carson Pass area with a few hikes further up on Highway 50. An informational meeting will be held in June to discuss the hiking season with interested people. The first hike will occur in late June or early July. All hikes are day trips with early morning start times (carpooling from Sacramento up to the higher elevations.) For the final hike to Mt. Tallac, we encourage team members to find accommodations up in the South Lake Tahoe area for the night before as our start time for this hike will be even earlier. To be put on a mailing list for an invitation to our informational meeting, email us via our Contact Us form.
Our goal for 2018 is to raise $15,000.
All team members are required to fundraise a minimum amount of $350 on behalf of the Triumph Cancer Foundation through our Crowdrise website. All donations are 100% tax deductible. In June, we will set up our special Crowdrise Fundraising page for all team members to start their individual fundraising.
